November 1, 2019- I was in the middle of a four day stay in London. It is a city full of music. I had gone to Lisa Stansfield's concert for the 30th anniversary of her album, Affection, the day before. The 1st was supposed to have been England's first day out of the EU [delayed again as it turned out]. I was looking for something to do locally and a little more low-key. The beautiful Union Chapel in Islington was advertising for a benefit concert for their Sunday school classes. I figured it would be a low-key way to spend the evening

First things first. The building and the hall are absolutely beautiful settings for music. The foundation stone set in 1876 the building seen to the left was completed. The neighborhood of Islington was becoming a fashionable place to live.Music played a big part of the services from the very beginning. The Sunday School was thriving. On June 27, 1944 the chapel was badly damaged by a German V1 flying rocket. After the end of World War II, the population of Islinton as well as church attendance itself was rapidly declining. The decline nearly resulted in the demolition of the chapel. It was saved in 1984 though.

After the refurbishment, the facility was once again a home for music in addition to church services. The main hall is a soaring masterpiece, and the acoustics brilliant!
In addition to the setting, Camille O'Sullivan's voice was positively uplifting. This French-Irish singer was dramatic, amusing, and mesmerizing. Rather than a low-key Sunday school fundraiser, this concert was a moving and beautifully transforming experience!
